How To Tie Realistic Flies

Abdomens

Many abdomens of the insects we try to imitate with our flies are very similar to one another. A wasp , bee , ant and even some spiders have abdomens that differ only slightly in size and shape so that the technique to do one can be altered slightly to create others.

To start, I thought I would show some basic tying techniques that I learned from David Martin when I first started tying realistics. All you will need is deer hair , white thread , some different sizes of monofilament fishing line and some flexible head cement. And of course some markers to change the color of the white thread.

Above is a technique to do a small thread and mono abdomen on the hook.An extended body abdomen will be demonstrated below as I tie a honey bee abdomen.
